Our Whey Protein: New Zealand Sourced, Clearly Labelled

Over the past week we've had a few customers ask a fair question - is NZProtein's whey actually from New Zealand?

The short answer is yes.

Our core NZ Whey and NZ Whey Isolate products use New Zealand dairy whey protein. This is the whey we buy, manufacture with, and label as New Zealand whey.

We understand why people are asking. There has been recent discussion in the supplement industry around product origin, relabelling, expiry dates, and manufacturing standards.

NZProtein is a completely separate company, and after this past week - we think customers deserve plain answers.

How Country Of Origin Is Verified

A common misunderstanding is that a finished protein powder can simply be sent to a laboratory to prove the country of origin.

Unfortunately, it does not really work that way.

Labs can test important things such as protein content, microbiological safety, heavy metals, allergens, amino profile, and other quality markers. We do use testing where appropriate, and we publish test information for some products.

But country of origin is primarily verified through the supply chain. That means:

  • who supplied the raw ingredient
  • where that supplier is based
  • product specifications
  • batch records
  • invoices and purchase records
  • manufacturing records
  • and traceability from raw ingredient through to finished product.

That is how food and ingredient origin is normally substantiated.

Our Whey

For our NZ Whey and NZ Whey Isolate products, we use New Zealand Fonterra whey protein.

Fonterra whey is the best tasting whey and has a naturally creamy texture without the need to add agents to modify this. (WPI is naturally more watery).

We do not buy imported whey and quietly sell it as New Zealand whey.

We do not relabel overseas whey as New Zealand whey.

Our whey products are labelled and sold as New Zealand whey because that is what we buy and use.

All wheys are different. If we changed our NZ Whey then there would be big variations in mixing, flavour, and texture. Those who have bought off us for some time know that the product is consistent. The consistency is the indicator and online reviews cite this.

Manufacturing

NZProtein does not manufacture whey protein powder at our own warehouse site.

We use an approved third-party manufacturer that operates under the appropriate New Zealand food safety requirements. This is intentional. Protein powder manufacturing requires proper systems, equipment, food safety controls, batch records, cleaning processes, and traceability.

Our role is to develop the products, source the ingredients, manage the brand, and sell the finished product. Manufacturing is handled through an approved food manufacturing process.

That means our whey products are not being mixed or packed casually at our warehouse. They are made through a controlled manufacturing process with traceability.

Best Before Dates

We do not tamper with best before dates.

We also do not have a business model that relies on buying large amounts of old or short-dated whey and trying to move it later.

NZProtein has a focused whey range. We do not carry dozens and dozens of different whey brands. We only sell our own NZ Whey and NZ Whey Isolate, and these products have fast turnover.

Because of this, we manufacture according to forecasted sales and normal stock movement. In simple terms: we make what we expect to sell.

This keeps stock fresh and avoids the problem of old product sitting around for long periods.

Value Whey

Occasionally we may come across a good deal and buy whey from overseas. When that happens, we do not sell it as our standard NZ Whey.

Instead, we sell it as a separate product called "Value Whey".

When we do this the product page states the relevant details at the time, including country or sourcing information where applicable.

In other words: if it is not our normal New Zealand whey, we do not pretend that it is.

At the time of writing this we don't have any Value Whey in stock which is why the product page is not live.

We do however have a Value Protein product which is not whey based. Rather, it's made from other milk proteins to try and be a cheaper alternative to whey. As stated on that page - those milk proteins in the current product are from New Zealand. If this changes then the page will update.

Why We Are Posting This

Trust matters and trust in NZ products have unfortunately taken a hit.

Most customers will never see the raw ingredient pallets, supplier documents, production records, or batch traceability behind a finished bag of protein powder. They see the label, buy the product, and trust that the business is telling the truth.

That trust is earned.

We are reviewing what extra information we can publish without exposing commercially sensitive supplier documents or internal records. This may include redacted supplier documentation, photos of raw ingredient pallets, product specifications, or more detail about how our batch traceability works.

We want to be transparent, but also accurate. A photo alone does not prove every bag of whey ever sold. A lab test alone does not prove country of origin. The real proof is the supply chain record behind each batch. (And this is auditable by MPI also).

That is the standard we work to.

Our Position

NZProtein is a separate company and is not affiliated with NZ Muscle or any other supplement company.

Our core NZ Whey and NZ Whey Isolate products use genuine New Zealand dairy whey protein.

Our whey products are manufactured through an MPI approved third-party food manufacturer.

We do not tamper with best before dates.

If we sell a different whey product, such as a value whey, we label and describe it separately.

If customers have questions about a product, its source, or its testing, they are welcome to contact us. We would rather answer directly than leave people guessing.

Thank you to everyone who has asked respectfully. We understand the concern, and we are happy to be clear.
